Plumbing & Process Systems

Insulation for plumbing or process systems is used to prevent heat gain and to control condensation.  Using state of the art materials, we provide insulation that is moisture resistant, will not absorb chemicals or combustible liquids, and virtually eliminates corrosion and deterioration of the piping.  Insulation can be applied in wet or dry environments, above or below the ground.

PLUMBING

The building code in the state of Massachusetts notes that any building with hot & cold water lines must insulate them – the hot for energy savings, the cold because of condensation.

Specifying sufficient insulation thickness with an effective vapor barrier is the most effective means of providing a system for controlling condensation on the membrane surface (the outer shell of the vapor barrier) and within the insulation system on cold piping, ducts, chillers and roof drains.  Sufficient insulation thickness is necessary to keep the surface temperature of the membrane above the highest possible design dew point temperature of the ambient air, so condensation is unable to form on the surface.

A vapor barrier system is needed to restrict moisture migration into the system through the facing, joints, seams, penetrations, hangers, and supports.  By controlling condensation, the proper insulation can extend the system’s service life and performance. Drastically reduce or eliminate mold growth.  As well as prevent potential health problems resulting from condensation.  Proper insulation is also necessary to prevent corrosion of pipes, valves and fittings directly related to condensation.

Pipe insulation is available in thickness from ½ inch and up.  By using multiple layers, we can attain any thickness required.  The industry uses mostly pre-molded fiberglass in 3-foot sections.

PROCESS SYSTEMS

Thermal insulation systems are of considerable importance in the industrial process systems operation, since they can affect process control.

Cold-water process systems require special attention for protection against condensation and the effect of moisture, often referred to as water vapor transmission or WVT, on the insulation system.  WVT is the measurement of how much water is transmitted through an insulation system under specific conditions.  Different insulation systems, vapor barriers, and installation methods affect and control the WVT of the system.

Selecting the right insulation for a high temperature system is based on the specs and requirements of the system.  We examine the insulation thermal value and consider other performance values, such as the process itself, its temperature range, and the ambient area surrounding it.
